SOMETHING LIKE A SIGH
The houses crouch at the water's edge
Looking out across to where
The fishing boats are huddled there
Inside the harbor's rocky hedge.
The snow-brushed giants stretch their limbs
Inclining toward the sheltered town,
And in the waters all around
The silent guardian orca swims.
I'm filled with something like a sigh,
But deeper, like a homeward groan;
A secret aching to be known
In this Alaskan lullaby.
