HER OVERLAPPING IMAGES

She's grappling with her overlapping images,

    Iconic and distorted fairy grim,

The lettuce heads have crystalized to cabbages

With faces that remind her mind of him.

She's telling lies but hasn't figured out they're true,

Unfounded in their eloquence of bliss,

And though you're not, she thinks you're only you,

Conveys her vacant heartache with a kiss.

She's tripping up the stairs in insubstantial dress,

    A look of I'll-Believe-If-You'll-Believe

In twinkles round her mournful eyes of more or less

The same as what you've known is up her sleeve.

She's grappling with her overlapping images,

    Iconic and distorted fairy grim,

The lettuce heads have crystalized to cabbages

With faces that remind her mind of him.

(691) January 14, 2012: The Dream Of The Burning House

THE DREAM OF THE BURNING HOUSE

The floors are all on fire and the walls

are glowing red with sheets of steaming ice.

I don my metal slippers lined with fur

and follow out the door the fleeing mice.

One turns to me with crimson eyes and says,

"It's not the fire, it's you we're running from."

"But why, " I say, "I've only ever thought

of you as friends who share my gypsy rum."

The ceiling crashes down between us swamped

in flames, and diving down the stairs I fly.

I mean I really fly. It's awesome how

I've suddenly escaped. I don't know why.

And then I'm on the snowy grass outside,

just watching as the house goes up in smoke.

I want to cry for all the lovely things

I've lost, but burst out laughing, "What a joke!"

"Go on and laugh, you stinking cad, I hate

the way you manage to be free of pain."

I turn around to find the voice and there

in tears, my brother, leaning on his cane.

"Don't cry," I say, "I've loved you every day.

I've missed your eyes of soft philosophy."

And suddenly, he's just a small-faced boy.

I lift him up and say, "Come stay with me."

(385) March 15, 2011: Periodic Lexicon

PERIODIC LEXICON

As every molecule we’ve ever found

is built upon the Periodic Table,

So every sentence we have ever said

the Global Lexicon has made us able.

We search the Forests of the Rain for plants

to catalog their deep organic codes,

But do we delve the Forests of the Word

to catalog their sweet poetic odes?

For every sentence we will ever say

the Global Lexicon will make us able,

As every molecule that will be found

will build upon the Periodic Table.

JOURNAL: Sky Blue Guest House

Took the 1030 ferry to Bequia.  Rented a scooter for half a day and rode it all over the island.  Took Mimi on the back to the Turtle Sanctuary where a man named King has been rescuing baby turtles for nearly 30 years and then releasing them into the Caribbean.  Mostly he raises Hawkbill turtles.  He had a whole bunch of little ones less than 5 months old in a couple of tanks. Then he had a few that were 5 years old, and nearly ready to be released.  I'm assuming the death rate is fairly high.  As I recall he has released some 800 turtles so far.  He has no funding from anyone, just loves turtles.  He charges a small fee for visitors.

We caught the 1630 ferry back to The Mainland, as they call it.  Our same taxi driver was there at the ferry terminal to pick us up.

He took us from the Airport to Sky Blue Guest House, from the Guest House to the Ferry, from the Ferry back to the Guest House, and then picked us up and returned us to the Airport.  He was a safe driver and true gentleman.  We were lucky to have found him.  Mimi bought a purse from him for $40 EC that his daughter had made to help defray her college tuition.
